Boston College wants someone that will embrace the campus spirit and that they can build a program around. Al Skinner was not that man. Though Skinner is leaving as the most successful basketball coach in the history of the school, his teams have been on the decline the last few seasons, as have ticket sales and fan interest. Many believe his humble demeanor played a big part of the little excitement that ever surrounded the team.
A coaching search has begun, and though the team has announced that they have received permission to speak to 3 different candidates, none have been identified. We believe we know who one of those might be.
Bruce Pearl is a graduate of Boston College, and had his first coaching gig as an assistant with the Eagles. Boston College can not be identified as a football school anymore than it can be described as a basketball school. Whereas at Tennessee, Pearl will always be competing for the spotlight with not only the Vols football program, but with the woman’s basketball team and coach. At BC, Pearl could take control of a program and make it the flagship of the university.
As we said before, the university wants someone to market their program around a coach. Well, even though Pearl has his moments outside of the arena, he very much embraces the program he coaches at. Since he is also an alum, he probably would have more reason to do so.
Will BC back the Brinks truck up to his door? He has been building something nice at Tennessee, as he just led them to their first Elite 8 appearance ever, and the SEC is much easier of a conference to compete in opposed to the the ACC. However, Pearl hasn’t stay too long in one place yet, so it wouldn’t shock us to see him head to New England.

It’d shock the hell out of me. Alumni ties are great and all…but Tennessee is a much better job. As much as Pearl claims to take a back seat to Summit, it’s pure bullshit. Even then, being the 3rd most important program in Knoxville>>>>>the flagship program in Boston, where BC basketball is less important than the Sox, the Celtics, the Patriots, the Bruins, and let’s not forget, the men’s hockey team. Also, SEC is much easier to build a program and keep it there, as opposed to the ACC where usually you’re starting out competing for 3rd.
BC is almost as bad a job as St. Johns…and you see how badly that search went.

Eff BC. Never should have left the Big East, dumbass elitist douchebags. Pearl ain’t happenin’. Hes got a better job at a better school in an easier to win conference surrounded by alumni that while interested, smile and say things like “oh well, I’m just glad it was a close game” when they come up 2 points short of the final 4.

You mean the same conference that will be folding after the Big Ten raids it?
You mad bro?
#12 by patphish on March 31, 2010 - 11:33 am
Raids it for who? Pitt and ND? Bye, don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Folding? Ummmmmm………ESPN will never allow that happen, the basketball ratings are too good.
And who talks like that?
#13 by john on March 30, 2010 - 3:23 pm
People in Boston care more about this, than who the next coach at BC will be…
Bill Belichick, Tim Tebow do dinner

Holy Crap! This happened?!
/ not really interested…
Seriously, college sports in Boston just don’t mean as much as the pros. We’ve got four legitimate professional teams, and for the most part each of them is a playoff caliber team every year. College sports will always take a backseat to the pro sports in Boston.

Funny for a city with more schools than any other on earth.
#16 by Big D on March 30, 2010 - 4:41 pm
Even better reason. With 50+ Colleges & Universities in the Greater Boston Area, it would be nearly impossible for fans of college sports to keep up with all the athletics in the city. The only college sports people around here really care about are BC football/basketball/hockey and BU hockey. Everything else is on the fringe.

too busy catching foul balls at Fenway.
#25 by cycledan on March 30, 2010 - 3:41 pm
Ever since BC fired their football coach for interviewing with the Jets, I think they hurt themselves. Nobody wants to work under those conditions.
#26 by cycledan on March 30, 2010 - 4:01 pm
Question for everyone. On ESPN radio, I heard that Golic has to wear a USC jersey to Notre Dame since he lost the best. What would Greenberg have had to do if he lost?
