Spartan Nation continues to feverishly follow Twitter this morning as they await a decision from Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo on whether will stay in East Lansing or take a chance at coaching a possible LeBronless Cleveland Cavaliers. What do I say to that? Relax. The answer is not coming today, nor will it come tomorrow. No, I don’t have a source that says that, but I think we can take a break from checking any updates from East Lansing.
Let’s get one thing straight, Izzo is not dragging this out. It has only been one week since reports surfaced that Cavs owner and Michigan State alum, Dan Gilbert, had serious interest in hiring Tom Izzo. It has been less than a week since Izzo and his family visited the Cavaliers facilities when Izzo also met with management and Gilbert himself. I don’t think we need to go over how tough of a decision this may be for him. I know that I had become a little restless over the weekend, and in hindsight, I was wrong. I also may have fallen prey to the numerous reports that he would make a decision by Friday night, then Saturday, then possibly Sunday, or at least before his camp began on Monday. Alas, we have no decision from him, and we shouldn’t be surprised. Guess who the camp counselors are? Michigan State Spartan basketball players. You think he is gonna make his decision, hold his camp in East Lansing, and expect the players he could possibly be abandoning to show up and work for free for him? Come on. Reporters can stop camping outside the Breslin Center this week; no announcement is coming.
Let’s also stop with the Brett Favre comparisons. Again, this has been one week, not 5 years. The only thing that you can compare about them is that a couple weeks before the Cavs job was offered, Izzo made what seemed like a definite statement that he wouldn’t leave Michigan State until he won a 2nd title, similar to how Favre says he is done at the end of each football season. Of course, Favre slowly changes course as his body heals. Well, Izzo has a great chance to win a second title in 2011 at Michigan State. However, if LeBron James decides to return to the Cavs, he has a great shot at winning a title in 2011 in Cleveland. That’s a pretty big dilemma for Izzo to ponder. Luckily he has his camp to run this week so that he can have a little bit of an escape rather than agonize over his difficult decision.
The big issue that will come into play after this week will be that Michigan State will need to have an answer. I don’t believe he is really leaving the Cavs hanging at this point. I still believe that John Calipari is in play for them if Byron Scott doesn’t wait around and takes a different job. They could just as well go another route and find someone to coach them. The Cavs are still more concerned about signing LeBron James than anything, and I don’t think having the coach in place July 1st is that big of a deal. Maybe July 15th, but not July 1st. But Michigan State is a different story. They need to be concerned about their program. They don’t want players jumping ship, or players with verbals for 2011 to reopen their recruiting. Coaches like Calipari, Rick Pitino and Thad Matta smell blood right now. If Izzo’s decision is to leave or drags on, they will want to go after some of these guys, like guard Brandon Kearney. The Athletic Department needs a decision relatively soon. They need to know what they have to do for the upcoming season and keep the program as stable as possible. Izzo doesn’t owe the school or the AD a return, but at least a somewhat quicker decision.

Just hire Chris Petersen and be done with it.
#2 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 9:15 am
to cleveland or msu?
#3 by john on June 15, 2010 - 9:19 am
He might as well just delay his decision until free agency starts.
#4 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 9:20 am
and for him, that works, not michigan state.
#5 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 10:28 am
why would that not work for Michigan State? What’s the pressing issue now?
#6 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 10:37 am
um, did you read post?
#7 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 10:39 am
Yeah but that just seemed like your opinion that they needed a decision soon rather than them actually needing one
#8 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 10:46 am
and my opinion is actually fact. college basketball recruiting is cut-throat, it makes football looks like a game of patty cake. FWIW, i don’t think Izzo is or was involved in anything shady with guys he has recruited and sold the school on a high moral/family ideal. if there is any hint that he may not be committed, kids are going to reconsider. you need whoever his replacement to be ready to go after these kids and convince them to stay. other coaches will smell blood in the water. so opinion? nope. reality.

Lebron first, coach second. It’s that simple.
I can’t believe Cleveland would pay him $6 mil without Lebron.
#10 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:02 am
And I personally think with all that Izzo has done for your program the school can should give him as much time as he needs. The last thing you want is to pressure him into making a decision and then flip flops a la Donovan from Florida
#11 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:05 am
Donovan made his decision within a few days. 2 weeks i think is plenty of time for the university to wait.
#12 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:09 am
it would be completely foolish of any university to wait an entire month for their coach, no matter what he has done, to make a choice. what if lebron doesn’t decide until august, because that’s what this is about? how long do you wait? you have to put a limit at some point.
#13 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:10 am
Give him a deadline of Mid July
#14 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:16 am
5-6 weeks is ridiculously long. this isn’t about retiring.
#15 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:26 am
I just think patience is a virtue and this guy deserves the time. It may suck for the fans and the school, but only because he means so much to you guys
#16 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:28 am
patience isn’t a virtue in recruiting. this doesn’t have to do with the fans. i would love for him to come back and wish he could take all the time he needs, but there are needs to the school and program that have to be addressed.
#17 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:33 am
But only one recruiting class, and as a fan of a team that hasn’t even sniffed success i say BFD you guys will rebound and be good again from one bad recruiting class
#18 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:36 am
one recruiting class? if he strings it out, and you lose your best player from this class because of uncertainty and because you couldn’t send your current head coach to reassure him, then you lose Izzo to the NBA, now you are behind the eight ball on the next class. and you may not rebound. johnny, you’re wrong. sorry.
#19 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:43 am
You’re stringing out the “what if’s” fairly far down the line. If they lose Izzo and they don’t win after that it says more about the guy replacing Izzo than the amount of time that Izzo took
#20 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:47 am
but you have to take “what ifs” into account. that’s what corporations do (and college basketball is a corp). you can’t just say, “we’ll wait and not worry about the direction of the company/program.”
#21 by Johnny on June 15, 2010 - 11:52 am
Yeah but you can go the same way if Izzo decides to leave tomorrow. Who’s to say that they still don’t lose the best recruit depending on the hire? I just think who the replace actually is will carry more weight than the timeline. That and you’ve become sorta spoiled with a good team over the years
#22 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 12:00 pm
you might still lose the recruit, but at least you have more of a chance to fight for him.
#23 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:32 am
and with that said, an ultimatum will never come from teh school, but they will lean on him to get a decision, and they should.
#24 by cabbage on June 15, 2010 - 11:35 am
So you’re advocating firing Izzo if he doesn’t make a decision soon? This whole deal has really got your head turned around Sparty.
#25 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:38 am
no, i didn’t say that at all. i am saying they will lean on him heavily a pressure a response.
didn’t even mention the beating he will take from the media if he strings this out into july.
#26 by cabbage on June 15, 2010 - 11:51 am
I’m with Johnny. I think you need to take a deep breath.
#27 by sparty on June 15, 2010 - 11:58 am
cabbage – again, read the post. i said he doesn’t have to make the decision today, but I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect a decision after 2 weeks of deliberation. that’s a long time to consider a job, in any industry. lebron isn’t tipping his hand, i think it is unreasonable to think you can wait for him to decide. besides, he won’t go to the cavs if they don’t have a coach in place. so you have to look at the job as if it is a rebuilding process, with the chance that it isn’t.
#28 by knightro on June 15, 2010 - 12:39 pm
I’m with sparty on this one. Patience may be a virtue but he who hesitates is lost. Izzo needs to crap or get off the can. LeBron is on his own schedule and has no incentive to make a move until he is ready and has been stroked more times than Tiger at an IHOP. Izzo may want to know he’ll have LeBron, but all he is likely to know is that there are as many zeroes in his paycheck as the commenters on this site.
#29 by cabbage on June 15, 2010 - 1:11 pm
15 years out to count for something. The Spartans baketball team isn’t going to fold up their tent if he leaves. If you force him to decide, chances are he’ll take the money. Is their some special coach waiting in the wings to take his place?
#30 by mizerle06 on June 15, 2010 - 1:15 pm
Lane Kiffin.
#31 by cbh49er on June 15, 2010 - 1:11 pm
Side with Sparty on this one. Letting Izzo wait until LeBron decides what he is going to do is beyond ridiculous to me.
